Speaker Notes: Communication Law and Media Ethics

The primary objective of this training today is to familiarize you with legal and ethical best practices for communication so as this organization moves forward, people who work for this company uphold the highest standards of social and ethical responsibility. On the surface, we say, “Of course, we want to do that. We want to be good communicators! We want to represent ourselves and our company well.” But then, before you know it, there’s a piece of commentary – written, spoken, recorded, viral on social media or subpoenaed - that’s extremely embarrassing, at best, or problematic for us and the organization, at worst. Understanding how laws apply - especially with how quickly and completely society has changed since they were first enacted – will be helpful as we gather and disseminate information and ensure we do so as ethically as possible. Let’s get started.

Management of Communication Projects

The Liberty Hope Foundation (LHF) is a small nonprofit organization founded in 2010. The organization helps families of children with disabilities combat social stigmas, ease their financial burden, and find emotional support. To continue to serve the needs of the families they support, LHF wants to build a brand-new, state-of-the-art medical facility and community center to complement and expand on the services they currently provide. This facility will provide care for young adults over the age of 21 who are transitioning out of pediatric care. To build this facility, LHF is launching a capital campaign. The goal is to raise $5 million in 12 months to start construction on the new facility. To officially kick off the capital campaign, they are planning to hold a major launch event this time next year.

Blog/Journal Entry (Personal)

There was no graveside service. There were no flower arrangements or casseroles or condolences. There were some sweet notes here and there, moments of quiet acknowledgment from dear friends; little texts letting me know people were thinking of me and praying, along with the occasional offer to go to lunch or get out of the house...but for the most part, there was silence. I think a lot of people really just didn't know what to say. I think a lot of others didn't feel as though it was worth discussing.
